Fifty for selling my blanket,
If ever I list for a soldier again
The devil shall be my sergeant.

Fifty I got for selling my coat,
Fifty for selling my blanket,
If ever I list for a soldier again
The devil shall be my sergeant.

Played when undesirables, both military and civilian, were drummed out of camp, or on their way to punishment. Its origin is uncertain, but it probably dates to the early 18th century. Originally a song of the British Army, it found its way, with embellishments, into the US Army in the 19th century.
